The internships that JAMP provides at the medical schools was by far the most beneficial thing they’ve given me. I think it helped give me an outlook of how medical school would be and the amount of information I would be expected to learn. I also met friends I am still close with today. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that I hope others are able to share.
How has JAMP helped you strive to achieve your goal of becoming a doctor?
JAMP has surrounded me with like-minded students. They do an excellent job of selecting students from diverse backgrounds who want to see their peers succeed. Being a good doctor means having a great team around you, and the people I have met and networked with because of JAMP, has shown and given me this.
What advice would you like to offer current or future JAMP students?
My advice would be to study with the mindset that someday you will have someone else’s life in your hands. School will inevitably be stressful at some point, but remembering why you want to be a doctor is important to your success.

About Daeija:
My name is Daeija Lewis and I’m from Bay City and I went to Texas State University. When I first attended Texas State, I wasn’t sure I could reach my goal of becoming a doctor, but I had an incredible advisor who supported and encouraged me and I was accepted into JAMP. I am proud to be a mentor and a positive role model for young girls who also wish to enter the healthcare field. Today I’m attending the University of North Texas Health Science Center and I hope to become an ophthalmologist.
