MCAT

As a current JAMP student, when do I take the MCAT? 

  • As a JAMP student, you will be required to take the MCAT by the deadline established by the JAMP Council. The exact date varies year to year so make sure to follow up with your JAMP Faculty Director and the JAMP Office for the specific date applicable to your cohort. 

What if I'm a JAMP alternate? When do I take the MCAT? 

  • A JAMP alternate should take the MCAT by the date designated by the JAMP Council. The exact date varies year to year so make sure to follow up with your JAMP Faculty Director and the JAMP Administrative office for the specific date applicable to your cohort. 

What program does JAMP use for MCAT preparation?  

  • JAMP uses a 3-phase MCAT preparation program provided by Kaplan. For more information, click here.

What does MCAT preparation timeline look like? 

  • The timeline for the MCAT preparation program can be found here.

What is the process if I do not meet the 502/124 requirements? 

  • Students are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the JAMP Council. JAMP students should communicate with their JAMP Faculty Director and the JAMP office for specific advice with their situation.  

 

Medical School 

What medical schools participate in JAMP? 

  • The list of participating medical schools can be found here. 

How does the interview/matching process work? 

  • Provided a JAMP student has met the criteria to be eligible to interview, the JAMP student will interview at the applicable participating medical schools for their situation. After students have interviewed, they will follow the TMDSAS match process with specific deadlines for JAMP students

Summer Internships

What do you do at the summer internships? 

  • A lot of interesting activities! Find more information here.

Do I get to choose where I go for my summer internship? 

  • No. The internship assignments are randomly assigned. However, summer internship sites are broken out like so: 

    • Summer 1: 

      • Baylor College of Medicine 

      • Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine

      • Texas A&M University, College of Medicine 

      • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center – School of Medicine 

      • The University of North Texas Health Science Center - Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine 

      • The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine 

      • Tilman Fertitta Family College of Medicine at University of Houston

    • Summer 2: 

      • Dell Medical School – The University of Texas at Austin 

      • Long School of Medicine, UT Health San Antonio 

      • McGovern Medical School – The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston 

      • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center – Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at El Paso 

      • UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine

When (approximately) will I find out my internship assignments for Summer I and Summer II? 

  • Both Summer 1 and Summer 2 internship assignments will come out no later than April of the applicable year.  

Does my internship evaluation and performance affect my admission decision to a particular school? 

  • A JAMP scholar should strive to put their best foot forward in all aspects of their application.  

 

General Questions

How can I manage all the demands of MCAT, HPAC, medical school applications, Summer II internship, and secondaries? 

  • The biggest thing you can do to be prepared is to plan and work ahead! As a JAMP scholar, a lot of your TMDSAS application will carry forward but you should start working on getting everything together during your 1st Summer Internship. Additionally, as a JAMP scholar, you are given access to Secondary Application questions at least 2 months before they are due. Make sure that you work ahead and don’t wait until the last minute. 

What happens if I decide not to pursue the path of being a physician anymore while I am still a part of JAMP, will I get penalized? 

  • If this situation occurs, you should get in contact with your JFD and JAMP Administration as soon as possible.  

My current plans are to graduate early, is that ok?  

  • JAMP will not prevent a student from graduating on-time with their degree if it is ahead of their cohort schedule. However, a JAMP scholar should contact the JAMP Administrative Office and their JAMP Faculty Director for further instructions.  

What happens if you apply to a non-JAMP medical school? 

  • The purpose of JAMP is that a student will attend medical school at one of the participating medical schools here in Texas. As such, it is not permitted for a JAMP student to go outside the program. If you are a JAMP student and considering this pathway, you must contact the JAMP Administrative Office and JAMP Faculty Director first.
